Quest Rewards
Key assumption: adequate lifestyle costs ~120-150 coins per month. A sword costs 100 coins. Adjust/scale the numbers below according to your setting.
To randomly generate a tangible reward, decide on the general value of the reward in GP and consult Treasure tables.
| Quest | Per Character | Total reward value | Example | Reputation Impact | Chance of Magic Items | Chance of non-coin reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petty | 10 | 40 | Deliver something important to another end of the city | No | - | - |
| Minor | 20 | 80 | Escort someone to another end of the city | No | - | - |
| Common | 100 | 400 | Some job with medium risk, but no perceived death risks | Minor | 1-in-6 | 2-in-6 |
| Normal | 250 | 1k | Some job with clear risks, combat is expected | Minor | 2-in-6 | 3-in-6 |
| Major | 500 | 2k | Combat is certain, potential magical dangers | Major | 3-in-6 | 3-in-6 |
| Epic | 1k | 4k | Combat and magical dangers are expected | Major | 4-in-6 | 4-in-6 |
| Legendary | 4k | 16k | Stakes are gigantic - regional or world-wide! | Great | 5-in-6 | 4-in-6 |
Adjust the level of reward up or down depending on the actual importance of it to the quest giver, independently of risks and location of the target.
| Location / Risks | No Risk | Minor Risk |
Normal Risk |
Major Risk |
Great Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Same settlement/area | Petty | Minor | Common | Normal | Major |
| 1-3 days from the settlement | Minor | Common | Normal | Major | Epic |
| Up to 2 weeks from the settlement | Common | Normal | Major | Epic | Legendary |
- No Risk - the job giver just needs speed to do something mundane.
- Minor risk - the job giver does not expect (or lies about it) that there is any danger of getting hurt. This does not mean that there is no danger.
- Normal risk - standard adventuring job - the risk taking is assumed.
- Major risk - there is a clear and known risk to life.
While coin is the most common form of payment, there are many other types of rewards a job might bring - information, access to restricted areas, faction advancement, art and artisan goods, titles, property or land, free hirelings etc.
